International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

26th July

International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is an annual occurrence that takes place each year on the 26th of July to raise awareness about the importance of mangrove ecosystems. This initiative was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2015. In fact this ecosystem is “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and we should act to promote solutions for their sustainable management, and conservation.

It is necessary to put into evidence that mangroves are rare, spectacular and prolific ecosystems and they form a particular habitat and ecosystem on the boundary between land and sea. Moreover mangroves not only contribute to the wellbeing of species present in this particular ecosystem, but also they function as a natural protection of coastal communities worldwide because they represent a natural coastal defense against storm surges, tsunamis, erosion and rising sea levels. Mangroves ecosysmems support a rich biodiversity and provide a unique habitats for fish and crustaceans.

Unfortunatelly, despite their functions, mangroves are disappearing three to five times faster than overall global forest losses. This poses a serious ecological problem and a tremendous threat not only to nature but also to different species. It is estimated that mangrove ecosystems and coverage has been divided by two in the past 40 years, this is why we need to act and protect them and avid their dissapereance.
