International Day of Action for Rivers

14th March

The International Day of Action for Rivers is celebrated on March 14th to sensitize people from all around the world about the importance of rivers. The idea of having an International Day Of Action For Rivers was seeded by the participants of the First International Meeting of People Affected by Dams in March, 1997 at Curitiba, Brazil.

Not only this Day aims at protecting rivers but also defending the rights of communities that depend on them.

One of the central motives of the Day is to develop and strengthen the regional and international networks for instilling more awareness about the importance of their role for our ecosystems. Rivers are like arteries, providing the world’s ecosystems with critical freshwater resources necessary to sustain a higher biodiversity.
