Tip #1:

Never leave waste around when outing

Put it in a waste bin and if you cannot find one or if it is full, keep your waste with you until you find another one. Do not put extra waste in a full waste bin, the wind will blow it away. If you have no choice, simply take your waste home.

Tip #2:

Put waste outside only when truck arrives

waste bags on the street

This behavior reduces the risk of the bag being damaged and the waste getting lost around the environment.

Tip #3:

Pick up plastic waste if you find it

If you are on vacation at the sea or on a mountain, maybe you can take part in a beach or cleaning mountain’s path action.

Tip #4:

Sort your plastic waste as efficiently

Do not mix plastic waste. The industry still has to work out better methods to recycle the various types of plastic. Differentiated containers exist to collect hard plastic and plastic foil separately. Make use of it. This helps in reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in residual waste.

Tip #5:

Use reusable bags and pouches

Use a durable shopping bag, and avoid plastic bags. Bring your own reusable canvas bags to contain fruit and vegetables and use cardboard boxes for all other products.

Tip #6:

Avoid the use of plastic disposable material

Avoid using forks, knives, spoons, stirrers and cotton buds made of plastic. Rather use a reusable drinking bottle, for example made of aluminum or glass and avoid the use of disposable cups. In any case, remember that even paper cups are usually covered with a thin layer of plastic, thus, if you decide to use these, remember to take them home and compost them properly or, maybe you prefer bringing your own cup. Don’t use any plastic drinking straws: use a glass at the bar or restaurant and bring your own drinking straw made of steel or bamboo.

And for your body care, when you need to shave, you better shave with a reusable razor and replaceable razor blades and, for the well-being, comfort and proper cleanliness of your children: did you know there are washable and reusable diapers?

Tip #7:

Avoid plastic packaging

Instead of buying pre-packaged slices of cheese, opt for slices cut and you will save money also. Today, already there are shops offering products such as nuts, cereals, pasta and beans without packaging; just bring your reusable bags or jars and, where possible, prefer the usage of cardboard or tetra packs to plastic for your fruit juices, washing fluids, detergents…and, why not cook your own food more often instead of buying packed prepared meals?

Tip #8:

Use eco-friendly products in personal care

avoid plastic micro beads

The cosmetic industry is making big efforts to replace the plastic micro beads but, you can already search for cosmetics and body care products like shower gels and toothpaste for example without such micro beads.

Tip #9:

Avoid synthetic clothing

Notably synthetic clothing such as for example fleece sweaters releases small plastic fibers into the environment when washed. Notably more than 1/3 of all plastic pollution found in the oceans come from laundry. Thus avoid synthetic clothing. Also you can install a filter in your washing machine or put your synthetic clothes in a special laundry bag. Remember that shorter and cooler washing (20°C-30°C) releases less plastic fibers.

Tip #10:

Be careful with paint

paint residues

Paint residues also release microplastics into the environment. Do not rinse your paint brush under the tap, as the rinsing water belongs in the container park. Also collect the dust that is released when sanding off painted surfaces.
