World Whale Day

15th February

World Whale Day is observed annually on the third Sunday in February. The celebration originated in 1980 in Maui, Hawaii with the intent to honor these noble marine mammals that have always swum off the hawaiian coast. This Day is intended to increase public awareness of the need to protect these majestic creatures.

Whales are among the most fascinating creatures living in our oceans. At sea they have no particular rivals but for centuries they have been threatened and hunted by man: their meat and their oil have always been considered delicious nutrients. Today, however, whales face another serious threat: the risk of loss of their habitat due to pollution caused by man. This is why it is so important to celebrate this Day and to raise awareness and take action in order to protect these creatures and their the habitat.
