World Wetlands Day

2nd February

World Wetlands Day is observed annually on the 2nd of February to raise global awareness about the vital role and importance of Wetlands. This date was choosen because it marks the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2nd February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. February 2nd 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of the Convention.

World Wetlands Day, however, was formally introduced only in 1997, and it aims at recognizing the influence and positive impact that Wetlands have had on the world, on our environment, and in general for the benefit of Mother Nature.

UNESCO is the Depositary of the Convention. The Convention has two main aims: 1) to halt the worldwide loss of wetlands; and 2) to conserve wetlands (the remaining of it) through wise use and management.
