World Tuna Day

With Resolution 71/124 in December 2016, the United Nations General Assembly officially decided to celebrate World Tuna Day with the aim of ensuring the conservation of the species. Tuna and tuna-like species are very important economically and they represent a significant source of food with amazing nutritional properties: their meat in fact contains important amounts of vitamins, proteins and minerals beneficial to our diet and health.
Tuna species count approximately 40 different species. These variety of tuna can be found in the Atlantic Ocean, in the Indian Ocean, in the Pacific Ocean, and in the Mediterranean Sea also.
It is estimated that about 7 million tonnes of tuna and tuna-like species are harvested yearly. Tuna species account for 20 per cent of the value of all marine capture fisheries furthermore it accounts for over 8 per cent of all globally traded seafood. Taking into account this information obviously we need to recognize the critical role of tuna to sustainable development, food security, beside considering it as a resource. That’s why the conservation of this species is part of one of the ONU’s goals for Sustainable Development and more exactly Goal n° 14: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources”.
