World Wildlife Day

3rd March

On 20th December 2013, at its 68th session, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the 3rd of March as World Wildlife Day to raise awareness on the importance to protect our planet’s fauna and flora.

Notably this date is the day of the adoption of the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” in 1973. This Convention plays an important role in ensuring that international trade does not threaten the species’ survival and their habitats.

World Wildlife Day is an opportunity to celebrate the various forms of wild fauna and flora existing all around the world. This Day is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the multitude of benefits that the preservation of world wildlife provides to humanity. This Day serves to remind us of the urgent need to step up the fight against reduction of species caused by humans and humans activities. The UN through Sustainable Development Goal 15 focuses on halting biodiversity loss.
