International Tiger Day

29th July

International Tiger Day is an annual occurrence celebrated on July 29th to raise awareness for tiger conservation. This Day was created during an international summit organized in 2010 to highlight the shocking confirmation that 97% of all tigers on Earth had disappeared in the previous century, with only about a little less than 4 thousand remaining alive.

The Day serves to raise public awareness in creating and promoting a more effective system of global protection for this mammal that risks extinction not only for the reduction of its natural habitat (caused by the excessive expansion of human settlements, deforestation, desertification, plantations, agriculture and climate change), but also because of the savage poaching of man to obtain riches from their skins and bones (the latter widely used to produce medicines and tonics).

It is necessary to put an end to this sad decline: today there are many international organizations involved in the protection of this important creature (such as for example: WWF, the IFAW and the Smithsonian Institute, just to name the most popular). Thanks to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) today the tiger (like the giraffe and many other animal species) has been included in the list of wild animals to be protected against extinction.
