National Panda Day

16rd March

Panda Day is observed on March 16th to draw attention to one of the world’s unique bears, a listed endangered species, and to promote efforts to preserve their habitat. Pandas are one of the world’s most endangered species despite this they play a vital role in providing a lifeline to other endangered animals. For example species such as the golden snub-nosed and the crested ibis all relay on the panda for survival, as it is pandas that spread seeds throughout bamboo forests, enabling vegetation to grow. This is another reason why it is also necessary to protect their habitat. Disruptions to their habitat can lead to survival and reproductive threats.

Pandas are native to China (south-central China), giant pandas are members of the Bear (Ursidae) family. Unfortunately their habitat is rapidly shrinking posing a serious threat to their existence. According to the World Wide Wilde Fund for Nature, in the wild only remain approximately 1.864 of them, and 100 living in zoos around the world.
