International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict
6th November
The UN General Assembly established November 6th as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflicts.
During an armed conflict often the environment remained the unpublicized victim. Polluted waters, destroyed agricultural crops, poisoned soils, burned forests, animals killed, are all consequences of these infamous events. In the last 60 years at least 40% of all conflicts have been linked to the exploitation of natural resources such as oil, gold and diamonds, but also water and fertile land (United Nations Environment Programme – UNEP).
On the 27th of May 2016, the United Nations Environment Assembly recognized the role of healthy ecosystems and sustainably managed resources in reducing the risk of armed conflicts, in the resolution it is reaffirmed the strong commitment of the UN to the full implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
