World Population Day

11th July

World Population Day comes on July, 11th. This recurrence was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. The celebration of this Day was inspired by the “Five Billion Day”, when the world’s population reached five billion people on July 11th, 1987.

World Population Day basically serves to increase people’s awareness on various population issues including for example: family planning, gender equality, poverty, health and human impact on our environment.

The world population is predicted that in 2030 there will reach 8.5 billion, and in 2050 if the trend continues about 10 billion. This exponential growth is unsustainable especially if we consider the exploitation of natural resources of our planet. Deforestation and conversion of forest land to farms or urban use which is one of the consequences of population growth, and it is threatening our ecosystem. As a matter of fact the loss of trees without sufficient reforestation has resulted in habitat damage for many species. Consequently this deforestation has resulted in a severe biodiversity loss. Notably deforestation is one of the causes of the extinction of many species living in these habitats, and of changes to climatic conditions, as well as desertification and displacement of indigenous populations.

It is therefore of basic importance to find a balance, addressing the threats caused by the continuing growth of world population and the necessity to preserve our environment, to grant future generations a safe place to live in harmony with nature because we only have one planet Earth.
