Earth Day

22nd April

Earth Day, first celebrated in 1970, is an annual event observed all around the world taking place on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

Today more than ever, considered how we are exploiting it, our Earth is in great suffering and urges us to act in its defense: climate change particularly and all the changes made by men to nature, such as the heavy damage to biodiversity provoked by a series of events such as rising temperatures, deforestation, intensified agriculture, melting ice, acidification of the oceans, just to name a few, are seriously threatening the future of our planet and our very lives.

Among other things, it seems there is a close correlation between the transmission of infectious diseases from animals to humans (through illegal wildlife trade) and COVID-19 is a striking example, a worldwide health pandemic also linked to the health of our ecosystem. Epidemics not only threaten public health and the global economy, but also biodiversity whose changes can affect the functioning of any ecosystem. What is necessary to put into evidence is that biodiversity can be part of the solution since this diversity of species would make difficult to pathogens to spread rapidly as it was put in evidence by many scientists.

Unfortunatelly biodiversity is deteriorating fast worldwide, at rates unprecedented in human history. Scientific studies estimate that around one million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction. This is why the Earth Day is so important and it is aimed ad instill more awareness among the hinabitants of our planet and pay more attention to our Mother Earth.
