International Snow Leopard Day
23rd October
Celebrated every year on October 23rd since 2014, Snow Leopard Day is a day that aims to raise awareness for its conservation and protection. Snow Leopard lives in the mountains, in very harsh mountain landscapes between 3000 and 4500 meters, now this feline is seriously threatened by poaching and climate change.
The adhering countries that originated this important calendar date are: Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Russia, Pakistan, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, India, China, Bhutan and Afghanistan. These are the countries that October 23rd, 2013 signed the Bishkek Declaration on Snow Leopard Conservation (Declaration signed in the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, at the first Global Snow Leopard Forum).
The exact number of remaining specimens is not known, but it is believed that, to date, there are just over 6 thousand left. Some scientists and researchers believe that the number is even a couple of thousand lower. Poaching seems to be the most serious problem, however, these species are also threatened by major climate changes: temperatures are rising and this causes serious damage to their fragile ecosystem and, as if that were not enough, man contributes negatively with the destruction of their natural habitats to perform mining at high altitudes.
