World Habitat Day
5th October ...
15th January
Every third Sunday in January, World Snow Day is celebrated. It was created to “encourage” young people to get involved in all sports activities involving this important element: “snow”. Over time, however, the Day has taken on a more important role and meaning.
The initiative for the birth of this day belongs to the FIS – International Ski and Snowboard Federation (international governing body of skiing and snowboarding, founded in 1924 during the first Olympic Games in Chamonix, France). The Day became institutional in 2012 as a result of a negative trend that was starting to involve fewer winter sports practitioners (although in reality the initiative has its roots in 2007 with a “broader” sports campaign dedicated, at the time, to children only [slogan “Let’s take the kids to the snow”]).
Today, however, World Snow Day turns the spotlight on the resource “snow” and its importance in protecting the environment, ecosystems and mountain wildlife. Unfortunately, snow has diminished in recent years due to the impact of human activities on the climate, which have seen an increase in average temperatures. Just to name the most important: (i) decrease in albedo (i.e. lower ability of the earth’s surface to reject sunlight to reduce the greenhouse effect, (ii) decrease in water supply during the summer months, and (iii) decrease in the ability to keep the soil hydrated for increased fertility.
