World Sea Turtle Day
16th June
World Sea Turtle Day is observed every year on the 16th of June to rise more awareness about the importance of sea turtles. Sea turtles are ancient animals that have been around since the time of dinosaurs but now these amazing creatures are threatened with extinction. It is not only important to protect marine turtles as a species because in danger of extinction, but also because protecting them and their habitat we also protect many other marine species.
It is worth noting that Sea Turtle Day would not be rightfully celebrated without mentioning Dr. Archie Carr who is the founder and “father of sea turtle biology.” Noteworthy the World Sea Turtle Day coincides with Dr. Carr’s birthday, June 16. The efforts of this researcher brought attention to the threatening conditions that unfortunately still impact on sea turtles.
Sea turtles unfortunately face many human-related threats including entanglement in fishing nets, habitat destruction, ocean plastic pollution, poaching of adults and eggs and climate change. This last element as researches suggest, and thus warming of Ocean may cause a higher ratio of female sea turtles, and this phenomenon is potentially affecting their genetic diversity.
In order to protect this species it exists a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) called “The Indian Ocean–South-East Asian (IOSEA) Marine Turtle memorandum of understanding” which is a non-binding intergovernmental agreement. The primary scope of this MoU is to protect, conserve, and recover sea turtles, and naturally their natural habitats which are located mainy in the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia. It is also worth noting that this MoU falls under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals.
