World Oceans Day

8th June

70% of our Planet is ocean thus it was naturally sooner or later we would have celebrated a World Oceans Day. The purpose of the Day, which takes place annually on the 8th of June, is to inform the public about the impact of huann activities on the oceans and thus to mobilize the world’s population to take actions to protect this habitat and for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.

It is worh noting that the concept to celebrate a Oceans Day was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit a UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. World Ocean Day was then officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008.

Celebrate the World Oceans Day is of fundamental importance to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. Oceans in fact represent our major source of food, and a critical part of the biosphere. We only have explored a tiny part of oceans and their abysses, however what we know for sure is that they provide most of the oxygen we breathe. This only reason should be enough to take care of them, also not to be forgotten, oceans are home of an incredible number of species.
