International days: the importance of their celebration
The International Days highlighted in this calendar focus on themes of global interest and can be interpreted as messages addressed to humanity containing precious meanings and values. These Days are aimed to inform and educate the general public about the importance of certain themes which need the attention of the entire international community to preserve our environment and biodiversity.
In fact the International Days aim to instill more awareness concerning delicate topics touching the entire global community. They are organized in the interest of all humanity. Some of the International Days were “born” before the establishment of the United Nations. The UN welcomed all of them as a very powerful tools to educate the general public and to address global problems affecting our planet.
Offices and departments of the United Nations, world organizations, governments, schools, universities, civil society, public and private sectors and, more generally, every single citizen are all, in the same way, organizers and protagonists of each of these days. Each International Day therefore offers the opportunity to organize “themed” activities and create more awareness among all the citizen of the world.
Who chooses the themes and date of the International Days?
The Member States of the UN propose the theme of an “International Day” but the final decision is taken by the General Assembly which shall adopt a resolution establishing the particular day.
The themes of the “International Days” to be established by the United Nations, or to be proclaimed by specialized agencies of the UN are always linked to the main fields of action of the UN which include the promotion of sustainable development, the protection of human rights, the maintenance of international peace and security, and the guarantee of international law and humanitarian action.
