International Mountain Day

11th December

International Mountain Day is observed on December 11th every year and it was decided by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003. Designating this Day as the International Mountain Day, the General Assembly intended to encourage the international community to organize events at all levels, to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development.

International Mountain Day is celebrated every year with a different theme which is relevant to sustainable mountain development and to instill more respect for this fundamental part of the biosphere. Today mountains are threatened by climate change: rising temperatures, for example, are causing glaciers to melt, in turn affecting the freshwater reserves that are essential for millions and millions of people.

It is worth remembering that mountains are home to 15% of the world´s population and they host approximately half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. For all these reasons, it is evident their conservation is a key factor for sustainable development. The conservation of mountain is part of Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nation.
