World Water Day
22nd March
World Water Day, held on 22nd March every year since 1993, was creadted by the United Nations, and it focuses on the importance of freshwater and it aimes at raising awareness of the two billion people (probably more) living without access to safe water. This Day calls for action to mitigte the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensure access to water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Noteworthy the idea for this international Day dates back to 1992, the year in which the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro took place. In fact it is in that year the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution by which 22nd March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting from the following year in 1993.
Water is inextricably linked to climate change. This Day wants to remember how a more intelligent use of water can greatly contribute in reducing floods, water scarcity, droughts and pollution, thus protecting our health and saving our lives.
