World Soil Day

5th December

The International Soil Day was declared by the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly on December 20th, 2013 after recognizing December the 5th as a Day to celebrate the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system. In fact World Soil Day is meant to draw attention to the role of Earth’s many soil types, and how they contribute to our ecosystems. They host all varieties of biodiversity of plants and thus the animals those plants sustain, and of course they allow human agricultural activities fundamental to humans.

The soils of our planet contain water and minerals that then are absorbed by plants, and which from there enter into animals and people. Therefore nutrition is a key area where soil is important and studied by agronomies. No wonder if today in the world today there are over 60,000 “soil scientists”.

It is soil biodiversity that determines the main biogeochemical processes necessary for life on Earth, this is why it is necessary to protect biodiversity, and to protect our soil, and environment.
