World Animal Day
4th October ...
10th December
Every year on the 10th December, International Animal Rights Day is celebrated. The Day emphasises the need to recognize “kindness and respect” for all creatures and life forms, without exception.
The Universal Declaration of Animal Rights (UDAR), proclaimed on the 15th October 1978 at UNESCO, is a document that deals with “the relationship between the human species and other species”. The Declaration proposes to mankind the adoption of ethical and behavioural standards necessary to put an end to violence and cruelty to animals.
The purpose of the Day is also “to raise the status of animals to improve welfare standards worldwide”. This date was intentionally chosen because it falls on the same day as Human Rights Day. Since then, events, demonstrations, and fundraisers have been organized worldwide to expose the reality of animal abuse and exploitation. After all animals are entitled to enjoy the same respect as humans.
