Coral Triangle Day

9th June

Coral Triangle Day is observed by “Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security” (CTI CFF) member Countries, is it to say: Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste, also called the Coral Triangle region. This Day was observed the first time on June 9th, 2012. This Day is intrinsically connected with the World Oceans Day, celebrated on June 8th. Thus to the organizers it appeared natural to establish this Day the following day. Coral Triangle Day aims at raising more awareness about the threats the coral reef is facing, in particular in this area, and it is also about ocean conservation and protection.

This area known as the Coral Triangle holds just 1.5% of the oceans area across the globe, but about 30% of the world’s coral reefs system. The Coral Triangle area is known to have the highest coral diversity, approximately 76% of the world’s coral species. This coral reef system supports other marine life, like dolphins and dugongs, blue and sperm whales.
