World Meteorological Day

23rd March

World Meteorological Day was established in 1961 to commemorate the establishement of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which is an intergovernmental body, on March 23rd, 1950.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nation responsible for promoting international cooperation on atmospheric science, climatology, hydrology and geophysics.

Humans and their activities play an important role when it comes to climate change and thus they also have an impact on Earth’s atmosphere and weather patterns. This Day is thus also observed to highlight the impact of our behavior.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has derived from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), the latest is rooted in the Vienna International Congress 1873. The WMO was then established by the ratification of he WMO Convention (1950). The Organization became then a specialized agency of the UN (1951). WMO’s headqarters are located in Geneva, Switzerland.
